Sasol, a leading South African petrochemicals company, and Eskom, the country’s state power utility, announced a partnership on Friday to explore the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as part of South Africa’s energy transition.
As the nation’s top coal consumers, both Sasol and Eskom play a critical role in efforts to shift towards cleaner energy. The collaboration will assess the LNG volumes South Africa needs to establish a viable import market, as well as the infrastructure required to support this initiative.
The companies highlighted that the focus is on using LNG for power generation to ensure a reliable electricity supply while supporting the country’s industrialization goals.
South Africa is considering partnerships with various countries to source LNG, with Qatar being a top option due to its strong relationship with Sasol and its vast natural gas reserves.
