Gambian Student in the US Avoids Deportation Over Gaza Protests

In Ithaca, New York, a Ph.D. student has successfully avoided deportation after Cornell University reinstated his enrollment, allowing him to extend his visa. The student, Momodou Taal, was initially suspended by the university for participating in a protest urging Cornell to divest from Israel. Public outcry and a pressure campaign eventually led to Cornell reversing its decision.

In a statement, Taal expressed no regret for his activism, saying, “I have no regrets. There will never come a time where I say to myself that I went too hard for Gaza. We still haven’t done near enough to stop the genocide.”

Student protests continue on various college campuses, with demonstrations and vigils marking a “Week of Rage” in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
