Emotional Reunion as Freed Thai Hostages Return Home

After nearly 500 days in captivity, five Thai farm workers abducted in Israel by Hamas have returned to Thailand, reuniting with their families in an emotional homecoming at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The freed hostages—Pongsak Thaenna, Sathian Suwannakham, Watchara Sriaoun, Bannawat Saethao, and Surasak Lamnao—had been working in southern Israel when they were kidnapped during the October 7, 2023, attack. Their long-awaited return on Sunday brought tears of relief as relatives embraced them.

“I don’t know how to put it into words,” said Pongsak Thaenna. “We wouldn’t be here without the help of so many people. I’m deeply grateful.”

Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa called their release on January 30 “very inspiring.” Bannawat Saethao’s father expressed his joy, saying his son would receive a traditional Thai welcome. Bannawat had moved to Israel for better job opportunities before his abduction. His wife, Wiayada, described the 15 months apart as a time of suffering but found comfort in their reunion.

The five men spent 10 days in an Israeli hospital for medical evaluations before their journey home. Each will receive financial support from the Thai government, ensuring they no longer need to work abroad.

One Thai hostage remains in Gaza, and authorities continue efforts to secure his release.

The return of the Thai hostages was separate from a ceasefire agreement that has seen hostages and prisoners exchanged between Israel and Hamas. Since the war began, 46 Thai workers have been killed, and thousands of Palestinians have lost their lives.
