The University of The Gambia (UTG) has taken a significant stride in reshaping the nation’s medical education with the official unveiling of its new Medical School design plan. The project, which was revealed at a well-attended ceremony in Banjul, is expected to revolutionize healthcare training and infrastructure in the country.
The new design showcases a modern, eco-friendly campus that will house state-of-the-art lecture halls, advanced laboratories, simulation centers, and a teaching hospital. Architects and planners behind the design emphasized sustainability, functionality, and the integration of cutting-edge technology to support world-class medical training.
Vice Chancellor Professor Herbert Robinson expressed his enthusiasm, describing the project as “a game-changer for UTG and the country at large.” He added that the school will not only train future doctors but also attract top-tier faculty and international partnerships.
The new medical school will be strategically located to provide students with practical experience through close collaboration with existing hospitals. It will also feature residential quarters for students and staff, green recreational spaces, and digital learning centers aimed at fostering innovation and collaboration.
Health Minister Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh praised the initiative, calling it a timely development that aligns with national goals to improve the health sector. He emphasized the importance of producing homegrown medical professionals equipped to address local and global health challenges.
Construction is expected to begin later this year, with completion targeted within the next three years. Once operational, the facility is projected to double the intake capacity of UTG’s current medical program, helping to meet the increasing demand for healthcare professionals in The Gambia and beyond.
