Ademola Lookman, Nigeria’s forward and Atalanta star, has been named the African Footballer of the Year, marking a remarkable turnaround in his career. Clad in a traditional agbada, he accepted the award in Marrakesh, delivering an inspiring message: “Turn pain to power.”
Born in South London to Nigerian parents, Lookman’s football journey began at Charlton Athletic, but his career hit roadblocks after a high-profile move to Everton. Despite scoring on his Premier League debut, managerial instability and inconsistent form saw him struggle to make an impact.
After stints in Germany with RB Leipzig and loan spells at Fulham and Leicester City, Lookman found his footing at Atalanta in 2022. His time in Italy has been transformative, with 43 goals and 23 assists in 97 appearances, culminating in a hat-trick in the Europa League final to secure Atalanta’s first continental title.
On the international stage, Lookman’s allegiance to Nigeria has been equally fruitful. His pivotal goals in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations propelled the Super Eagles to the final, earning him a spot in the tournament’s Best XI.
Reflecting on his journey, Lookman emphasized resilience and hard work. As Africa’s best player, he now inspires a new generation, proving that perseverance can turn setbacks into triumphs.
