Banjul North Representative Urges Nationwide Response to Rising Suicide Cases

Hon. Modou Lamin B. Bah, Member of the National Assembly for Banjul North, has issued a passionate call for immediate action to combat the increasing cases of suicide in The Gambia. Describing the trend as a national emergency, he emphasized the need for a comprehensive and compassionate approach that includes legislative reform, data-driven strategies, and mental health support systems.

Bah advocated for the decriminalization of suicide to remove legal barriers that prevent individuals from seeking help. “We must amend the laws that punish those struggling with suicidal thoughts,” he stated. His comments follow the tragic reports of three suspected suicide cases in a single week.

“These aren’t just numbers; they are people with families and stories,” Bah said. “We cannot afford to ignore the pain beneath these tragedies. Each one signals a deeper crisis in our society.”

Reflecting on personal encounters with those suffering in silence, Bah highlighted the cultural, legal, and spiritual stigmas that prevent open conversations about mental health. He stressed how the pressure to appear strong often leads people to suppress their struggles, with devastating consequences.

He also criticized the chronic neglect of mental health services in the country. “For every suicide we hear about, there are many more who suffer in silence, waiting for someone to care, to listen, and to help,” he said.

Bah’s message was clear: a national suicide prevention strategy is urgently needed to break the silence, support those in need, and prevent further loss of life.
