Barrow Warns Critics Over Third Term Ambitions

President Adama Barrow has firmly warned against efforts to block his intention to seek a third term in office, insisting that his candidacy for the 2026 presidential election is legal under the current Constitution, which does not impose term limits.

Barrow, speaking to delegations from Upper Niumi and Jakadou at the State House, expressed frustration over opposition voices, especially from those who recently joined the United Democratic Party (UDP). He accused them of hypocrisy, recalling how some of these critics fled the country during difficult times and contributed nothing to national change.

“These same people making noise today were hiding when the country needed them most. Some didn’t even spend a single dalasi for the change they now claim to defend,” Barrow said, visibly angry. “Now they’re in the UDP, declaring that I won’t run for a third term. I swear, if they try anything, I’ll respond in a way they won’t forget.”

The president also urged Gambians not to be swayed by handouts from the opposition, claiming they offer nothing of substance. “If they come to you with D1,000 to buy your support, reject it. They don’t have a development plan like we do,” he said.

Barrow went on to highlight what he sees as his achievements, emphasizing that he has fulfilled the promises made during his campaigns. “I’m not just a politician—I’m someone who delivers results. The progress my government has brought across the country speaks for itself.”

He concluded by revealing that he now has a strong team around him—what he called “Team Barrow”—which he believes will help him complete his development agenda and secure continued growth for The Gambia.
