Members of the 22nd China Medical Team heading to The Gambia are currently participating in pre-departure training at The First Hospital of China Medical University in Shenyang, Liaoning province. The training is led by Muisha Mbikyo Bienvenue, a doctoral student from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), who has been involved in preparing medical teams for Africa on six occasions.
Having moved to China over a decade ago to pursue a medical career, Bienvenue has gained insight into the vast differences between the healthcare systems of China and his home country. His passion for healthcare stems from his personal experience—his mother’s heart condition and the lack of adequate medical services in his hometown drove him to become a cardiologist. Sadly, she passed away before he could complete his studies, but her memory fuels his dedication to helping others.
China Medical University has a long-standing commitment to training international healthcare professionals, and since 2010, it has educated nearly 2,300 students from 108 countries. Bienvenue is recognized as an exceptional student, admired for his hard work and commitment to his patients.
China has a strong history of sending medical personnel to African nations, with over 25,000 professionals having provided care and training across the continent over the past 60 years. Bienvenue, inspired by his experience in China, hopes to return to the DRC after graduation to contribute to improving his country’s healthcare system.
