Darboe Urges Mutual Respect and Cooperation in Message to Barrow

In a rare gesture of goodwill, Democratic Party (UDP) leader Ousainu Darboe has responded positively to President Adama Barrow’s congratulatory message on his re-election as the party’s flag bearer. Darboe recently reclaimed the position after a tightly contested race involving ten other contenders.

In his message, Darboe emphasized that mutual respect between himself and President Barrow could ease political tensions and promote harmony among their supporters. He expressed his party’s readiness to collaborate with the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) and other groups in The Gambia to strengthen stability and national unity.

“On behalf of the UDP leadership and members, I appreciate your kind words and the democratic spirit of your message,” Darboe wrote. He stressed that healthy competition between political parties must go hand in hand with respectful relations among leaders and institutions.

Darboe further assured Barrow of the UDP’s willingness to cooperate with all political and civil society actors in advancing democracy, the rule of law, and political tolerance. He also expressed confidence that the 2026 presidential election and those that follow will be free, fair, and transparent, noting that the new Independent Electoral Commission leadership, along with the political and security institutions, must live up to the task.

Reiterating his party’s stance, Darboe said the UDP will continue to act responsibly and lawfully, setting an example for others. He concluded by calling on all political actors to work together to entrench democracy, tolerance, and good governance for inclusive growth and the well-being of Gambians.
