During its 66th Ordinary Session, the Authority of Heads of State and Government directed the ECOWAS Commission to conduct an assessment mission in The Gambia. The purpose of this mission is to evaluate the financial implications of continuing the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG).
ECOMIG was initially deployed in January 2017 to restore peace after a political crisis caused by former President Yahya Jammeh’s refusal to step down. The mission played a key role in facilitating the peaceful transition to President Adama Barrow’s administration.
Since then, ECOMIG’s role has evolved into stabilizing efforts, focusing on training and reforming the security sector to support The Gambia’s ongoing development.
