Passengers at Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) were left stranded on Wednesday due to a strike by airport workers protesting a planned deal between the government and India’s Adani Group. The agreement involves renovating the airport, adding a new runway and terminal, and granting the group operational control for 30 years. The Kenya Airport Workers Union organized the strike, citing concerns about potential job losses and reduced working conditions for remaining staff. As a result, all flights have been grounded.
Kenya Airways warned of flight delays and possible cancellations, urging travelers to expect disruptions.
The strike comes after workers had initially postponed the protest pending talks with the government. However, recent sightings of unfamiliar individuals taking photographs with airport officials sparked concerns about the impending deal.
On Monday, Kenya’s High Court temporarily halted the deal’s implementation until a legal challenge from the Law Society of Kenya and the Kenya Human Rights Commission is heard.
