The Gambia has been recognized by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation’s 2024 Index as one of the 10 African countries showing the most significant improvements in good governance. This marks a notable advancement since the previous index, highlighting progress in key areas such as human development and economic opportunities.
Despite ongoing challenges like reduced security and decreased democratic participation, Gambia’s achievements stand out against the backdrop of stagnation and governance decline seen in many other African nations.
The 2024 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG), which tracks governance performance across the continent, was released yesterday. It shows that while 33 out of 54 African countries have not made progress, countries like Gambia continue to advance. The report, covering the years 2014 to 2023, analyzes data from multiple sources and focuses on governance categories such as Security, Rule of Law, and Human Development.
While Africa’s governance progress has slowed in recent years due to conflict and shrinking democratic spaces, Gambia and several other nations have maintained or accelerated their improvements, with Gambia ranking among the top 10 most improved nations in governance.
