Gambia Demands Answers After Fatal Police Shooting of Young Migrant in Spain

The Gambian government is calling for a full judicial investigation following the tragic death of 19-year-old Abdoulie Bah, a Gambian migrant who was fatally shot by police near Gran Canaria Airport in Las Palmas, Spain, on May 17.

According to reports, Spanish police opened fire on Abdoulie after he allegedly attacked a taxi driver with a knife. It has since emerged that Abdoulie was reportedly suffering from schizophrenia at the time of the incident.

In a statement issued on Thursday, The Gambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended its condolences to Abdoulie’s grieving family and the broader Gambian community in Spain.

“The Government of The Gambia deeply regrets the loss of such a young life under these tragic circumstances,” the statement read. “We stand in solidarity with Mr. Bah’s family and offer our prayers for the peaceful rest of his soul.”

The Ministry also voiced serious concerns to the Spanish authorities about the use of deadly force, and has officially requested a transparent, independent judicial investigation into the events that led to the young man’s death.

To support the family and ensure Gambian citizens abroad are protected, the Deputy Head of Mission from the Gambian Embassy in Madrid is being sent to Las Palmas. The diplomat will meet with Spanish authorities and members of the local community.

Efforts are also underway to return Abdoulie Bah’s body to The Gambia, so he can be laid to rest according to Islamic rites.

This case has sparked strong emotions, with many calling for justice and better protection for vulnerable Gambians living overseas.
