President Adama Barrow of The Gambia has commended Nigeria for its significant support in advancing education and technical expertise within his country. Speaking during the 17th Convocation Ceremony of the University of The Gambia in Banjul, President Barrow highlighted the transformative impact of Nigerian volunteer professors on the nation’s academic landscape.
In a statement delivered by Mr. Nkem Anyata-Lafia, Special Assistant to the Director General of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (NTAC), Barrow expressed deep appreciation for the dedication and expertise Nigerian volunteers have brought to Gambian institutions.
As Chancellor of the university, Barrow emphasized that the deployment of skilled professionals through the NTAC program has played a crucial role in national development, describing Nigeria’s support as a valuable contribution to Africa’s progress.
NTAC’s Director General, Mr. Yusuf Yakub, also addressed the gathering, celebrating the growing global recognition of the Corps’ work. He praised President Bola Tinubu’s 4-D Foreign Policy Initiative for reinforcing Nigeria’s international partnerships and promoting global development goals.

Yakub recalled the enduring ties between Nigeria and The Gambia, noting that Nigerian volunteers have held key academic positions, including the first Vice Chancellor of the University of The Gambia. He added that NTAC volunteers are currently leading the University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET) in The Gambia.
“Our longstanding friendship with The Gambia is a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to African unity and progress,” Yakub said, reaffirming NTAC’s dedication to sustaining and strengthening this partnership.
Since gaining independence in 1965, The Gambia and Nigeria have enjoyed strong diplomatic relations, a bond reflected in their ongoing educational and technical collaborations.
