The Gambia Immigration Department has questioned Sira Touray, the wife of fugitive politician Mbemba Drammeh, regarding a passport allegedly issued to her husband before his escape to France.
Drammeh, a former NPP member who defected to the UDP, was arrested in December after claiming involvement in rigging the 2021 elections for President Adama Barrow. He was later released on bail but fled the country, leading to legal action against his sureties, who were ordered to forfeit D100,000 each.
Immigration officers reportedly visited Drammeh’s home and took his wife in for questioning at the Immigration headquarters in Banjul. Sources claim she admitted receiving the passport from a Mr. Camara and passing it on to someone for delivery to her husband. She was later released on bail for D100,000 and instructed to report again on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Drammeh recently released an audio message alleging that senior police and immigration officials facilitated his escape. The police have denied any involvement in his wife’s questioning, while immigration officials have yet to comment on the matter.
