The Gambia celebrates its 60th anniversary of independence today, a moment of pride, reflection, and optimism for the future.
Under the theme “Marching in Solidarity for Self-Reliance and National Development,” the nation commemorates six decades of sovereignty, unity, and resilience. The celebrations provide an opportunity to honor the sacrifices of past generations while looking ahead with hope.
From the capital, Banjul, author and social critic Baba Sillah described the atmosphere, particularly in urban areas, as one of excitement and renewed optimism. He highlighted progress in education and infrastructure, acknowledging the country’s steady development.
Reflecting on the past, Sillah recalled how the independence celebrations were overshadowed during the 22-year rule of former President Yahya Jammeh, when the day was instead used to mark the 1994 coup. Since the transition to a new government, however, the Gambia has experienced positive change. While challenges remain, Sillah noted a growing sense of unity and purpose among citizens.
As Gambians celebrate this milestone, they also remember the heroes who fought for independence in 1965. Despite past struggles, the nation’s spirit remains strong, with hope guiding its path forward.
