Gambia Partners with Ghana’s Kumasi University to Advance Procurement Training

The Gambia Public Procurement Authority (GPPA) has formalized a partnership with Kumasi Technical University in Ghana to facilitate the enrollment of 35 students and procurement officers into degree programs.

At a ceremony held at the GPPA headquarters on Kairaba Avenue, provisional acceptance letters were handed to the selected candidates. These students will undertake a two-year degree program in procurement and supply chain management at Kumasi Technical University, a prominent institution in Ghana renowned for its undergraduate and postgraduate offerings in various fields.

This collaboration also involves the Gambia Public Procurement Institute (GPPI), which will work with the university to mentor and train professionals in public procurement. Advanced diploma holders from GPPI who graduate with merit will be admitted directly into the third year of the degree program at Kumasi Technical University.

During the event, GPPA Director General Phoday M. Jaiteh highlighted the importance of this partnership in improving efficiency and professionalism within Gambia’s public procurement system. He congratulated the students and expressed gratitude to Kumasi Technical University for supporting the initiative. Jaiteh urged the students to excel in their studies, demonstrate responsibility, and serve as ambassadors for the Gambia while in Ghana.

Jaiteh emphasized the values of discipline, creativity, and innovation as key to achieving the Gambia’s development goals. “Change begins with you. As youths, you are the hope of this nation, and it is your responsibility to lead the way,” he stated.

Maurice J. Gomez, representing GPPI, reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to collaborating with leading global universities to enhance the expertise of Gambian procurement professionals as part of ongoing reforms. He praised Kumasi Technical University as a premier institution in Africa.

Additionally, the GPPA director of procurement, policy, and operations lauded the progress achieved by GPPI, noting its pivotal role in raising procurement standards in the Gambia.
