The Gambian government is preparing to present a motion to the National Assembly, seeking approval for the deployment of Gambian soldiers to join the ECOWAS stabilization mission in Sierra Leone. The motion is part of the newly approved agenda for the National Assembly sessions, scheduled to take place from September 9 to 27, 2024.
If ratified, which is highly likely, Gambian troops will join other West African forces in the ECOWAS mission aimed at stabilizing Sierra Leone, which has been facing security concerns since the alleged attempted coup in November last year that resulted in the deaths of several soldiers.
ECOWAS, during its 64th Ordinary Session held in Abuja, expressed concerns over the situation in Sierra Leone and announced the deployment of a regional security force to help restore stability. The motion for Gambian troop deployment will be introduced by Defense Minister Serigne Modou Njie on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
