At a high-level diplomatic gathering in Istanbul, Gambia’s Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara, speaking on behalf of the country, issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s recent military actions against Iran. Describing the attacks as deliberate and provocative, he said they violate international law and threaten regional peace while diverting attention from the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The statement was made during a session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), where Gambia called for unified diplomatic action among member states. According to Tangara, the strikes on Iran are not only a serious breach of sovereignty but a calculated distraction from what he described as a “genocide” unfolding in Gaza, where nearly 290,000 children are at risk of starvation due to ongoing blockades.
Reaffirming Gambia’s support for the Palestinian cause, the delegation urged the international community to apply consistent pressure on Israel to respect international law and return to the peace process. “We must resist the trap of manipulation and focus on a diplomatic solution,” Tangara emphasized.
Gambia also acknowledged and supported Turkey’s new role as chair of the council, praised Cameroon for its previous leadership, and welcomed Iraq’s offer to host the next session. The country further expressed gratitude to the OIC’s Secretary-General for his leadership.
Extending its concerns beyond the Middle East, Gambia brought attention to the plight of Muslim minorities around the world, particularly the Rohingya community in Myanmar. It thanked member nations for supporting Gambia’s legal challenge at the International Court of Justice and encouraged further financial contributions to sustain the case. Kuwait was specifically recognized for a recent donation.
To maintain momentum on the Rohingya issue, Gambia announced plans to lead a special ministerial committee meeting during the Istanbul conference.
In line with the summit’s theme, “The OIC in a Transforming World,” the Gambian delegation stressed the need for reform within the organization. They called for stronger institutions, improved responsiveness, and greater global impact, citing outcomes from the 15th Islamic Summit held in Banjul.
The address ended with a pledge of full support for the reform agenda and a commitment to ongoing dialogue. Gambia emphasized the need for unity and strategic partnerships to enhance the influence of the OIC and the Muslim world as a whole.
