The 6th edition of the African Women Arts and Film Festival (AWAFFEST) is set to take place in The Gambia from April 24 to 25 at the Ebunjan Theatre.
This year’s festival will honor renowned cultural icon Janet Badjan-Young with the Legend Award, in recognition of her lifelong contributions to arts, film, and theater in Africa. As the founder of the Ebunjan Theatre, Badjan-Young has played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting African performing arts, making a lasting impact on the continent’s cultural landscape.

The award ceremony will be one of the key highlights of the event, celebrating her legacy and dedication to storytelling through the arts.
The festival will showcase 16 films from across Africa and beyond, all centered on themes of resilience, hope, and transformation. A specialized workshop will also be held to support and train young women aspiring to enter the film industry.
Featured films such as Widow’s Gift, Beware, R.E.S.C.U.E, and The Girl From The Village: A Story of Hope will be available for streaming on Rootflix, a platform dedicated to multicultural cinema.
AWAFFEST, dedicated to celebrating African women in filmmaking, marks its West African debut with this edition. The festival has previously been hosted in Eastern and Southern Africa, including countries like Tanzania and Zambia. It continues to grow in influence as a sister festival to The African Film Festival (TAFF) in Dallas, Texas.
