Gambian Army Confirms Death of Brigadier General Bora Colley in Custody

The Gambia Armed Forces has announced the death of Brigadier General Bora Colley, a former high-ranking officer linked to alleged human rights violations during the rule of former President Yahya Jammeh.

According to a statement, Colley voluntarily returned to The Gambia on August 9, 2024, after eight years in self-imposed exile, citing declining health. Upon his return, he was taken into state custody due to his involvement in cases highlighted by the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC), which had recommended his prosecution for alleged crimes, including torture and extrajudicial killings.

The army stated that Colley received continuous medical care while in custody but passed away on March 9, 2025, due to his health condition.

The Attorney General has since requested a coroner’s inquest to determine the exact cause of death.

Extending condolences to Colley’s family, the military reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investigating and prosecuting cases identified in the TRRC report.
