Works Minister Ebrima Sillah has expressed concern over the increasing use of newly built OIC roads as business centers. He has urged law enforcement to take immediate action to remove unauthorized businesses occupying these roads.
Speaking during a nationwide tour to inspect ongoing road projects, Minister Sillah emphasized the need to ensure roads remain clear for traffic and pedestrians. His tour, conducted alongside officials from the National Roads Authority, aimed to assess construction progress and address challenges.
During visits to Bundung Highway and other OIC roads in the Kanifing Municipality and West Coast Region, he praised the overall progress of the 50km road project. However, he instructed contractors to complete unfinished ramps, improve drainage systems, and ensure proper maintenance.
The minister specifically highlighted Bundung, where roadside businesses such as fridge and welding workshops, as well as retail shops, have taken over completed road sections. In Kanifing, pedestrian walkways are reportedly being used by mechanics for vehicle repairs.
He also called on local councils to collaborate with the National Roads Authority to improve waste management and keep roads clean. He noted that improper disposal of waste, particularly by donkey cart operators, remains a significant challenge.
Minister Sillah urged all Gambians to work together to resolve these issues, ensuring that newly constructed roads serve their intended purpose. His inspection tour is set to continue in oth
Kanifing Municipality and West Coast Regioner regions.
