Gambia’s Vice President’s Wife Encourages Nigerian Community to Foster Unity and Economic Growth

Mariam Darling Jallow, the wife of Gambia’s Vice President, has encouraged Nigerians living in Gambia to continue their positive contributions to the country’s economy.

Speaking at the Oodua Progressive Union (OPU) summit held in Gambia, where she was recognized as Mother of the Day, Mrs. Jallow assured that the Gambian government remains committed to supporting a welcoming business environment for Nigerians across the nation.

Mrs. Jallow highlighted the cultural similarities between her Gambian heritage and Nigeria’s Yoruba community, emphasizing the shared values of humility and hospitality. She commended the Yoruba people for their role as ambassadors of unity and goodwill wherever they reside, urging Nigerians in Gambia to maintain peace and cohesion within their community.

Iba Gani Adams, the Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland and global convener of OPU, also addressed the gathering, encouraging Nigerians to uphold their national identity and cultural pride while abroad. He underscored the importance of unity among Nigerians in the diaspora, recognizing them as representatives of Nigeria’s diversity and values.

Adams reiterated his stance on restructuring Nigeria, advocating for a regional governance system that would allow federating units to develop independently. He stated that Nigeria’s growth could be better achieved by aligning with the governance structure of the 1960 and 1963 constitutions.

Additionally, Mayor Roney Malick Lowe of Banjul praised the Nigerian community in Gambia for their contributions to the country’s progress. Speaking on the benefits of regionalism, Asiwaju Kunle Ojikutu, a legal expert and guest speaker, argued that decentralized governance promotes local development, cultural preservation, and effective conflict resolution.

Chief Segun Ogunpitan, OPU’s African Union Coordinator, formally opened the summit, urging other African nations hosting OPU branches to uphold the standards set at such gatherings. The 2025 summit is scheduled to take place in Egypt.

In closing, Gambia’s OPU Coordinator, Abdul Akeem, thanked all attendees, recognizing Gambia as a peaceful environment where individuals from various backgrounds collaborate to contribute to the country’s economic growth. The event was attended by notable OPU leaders and members of the Yoruba community in Gambia.
