Ghana is collaborating with The Gambia to implement the ECOWAS Free Roaming initiative, aimed at reducing telecommunications costs for citizens traveling between the two countries. This initiative seeks to promote seamless communication, foster economic ties, and strengthen regional integration.
Discussions between stakeholders from both nations took place from November 19 to November 21, 2024, culminating in a Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement sets the stage for technical and regulatory preparations, with the launch of ECOWAS Roaming Regulations anticipated in the first half of 2025.
The Deputy Director General of Ghana’s National Communications Authority highlighted the country’s leadership in regional connectivity, citing successful bilateral agreements with Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, and Benin. He emphasized that extending affordable telecom services to The Gambia represents a significant step toward a connected West Africa, supporting economic growth and tourism.
The Deputy Director General of The Gambia Public Utilities Regulatory Authority expressed optimism that the initiative would enhance regional integration while addressing emerging technologies like 5G to ensure consumer-focused solutions.
