Ghana, Lesotho, The Gambia Compete for Commonwealth Secretary-General Position

President Bola Tinubu has assigned Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), where a new Commonwealth Secretary-General will be chosen.

Shettima will join world leaders, including King Charles of England, at CHOGM, held in Apia, Samoa, from October 21 to 26. The meeting’s theme, “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth,” will focus on member nations collaborating to unlock their potential and build a connected, digital Commonwealth.

This year, candidates from Lesotho, Ghana, and The Gambia will compete for the role of Commonwealth Secretary-General, with Nigeria playing a significant part as the largest African member. Historically, Nigeria’s Emeka Anyokwu was the first African to hold the position from 1977 to 1983.

In addition to the election, discussions will address global economic, environmental, and security challenges. The event aims to foster resilience, innovation, and growth while empowering the Commonwealth’s 1.5 billion young people for a sustainable future.

Shettima is expected to use the Commonwealth Business Forum to attract investment to Nigeria, as experts and leaders propose solutions to global challenges. He will also participate in bilateral meetings, executive sessions, and the Commonwealth People’s Forum, which engages citizens with leaders on global development issues.
