Ghana Police Arrest Protesters Over Government’s Economic Policies

Ghana’s police have detained dozens of demonstrators in the capital, Accra, during protests against the government’s handling of the economy. The protesters were also expressing concern over the government’s approach to illegal mining, which poses significant environmental risks.

Authorities accused some participants of attacking officers and vowed to respond firmly to those responsible. Police claimed the protests were unlawful, leading to clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement.

However, Democracy Hub, the group that organized the three-day protest, accused the police of instigating violence against peaceful protesters. Oliver Barker Vormawor, one of the group’s leaders, stated that legal action would be pursued and urged citizens to be prepared for potential arrests.

These protests occur as Ghana approaches its December presidential election, with the country still recovering from a severe financial crisis in 2022, when inflation reached 54 percent. The economic situation remains a key issue for voters.
