The Gambian government has granted a two-year contract extension to Yankuba Darboe, Commissioner General of the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), just days before his scheduled retirement. This was confirmed by the Minister of Information, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay.
Darboe, who has led GRA since 2014, is credited with implementing significant structural and systemic reforms, including digitalization and capacity-building initiatives. Under his leadership, GRA has consistently exceeded revenue collection targets, with 2024 figures surpassing the projected D19.2 billion by over D1 billion. The authority is now working towards a new target of D23 billion for 2025.
A seasoned customs officer with extensive experience in tax administration, Darboe holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and an MBA in management. He has been recognized for his contributions to tax reforms and was named Gambian of the Year in 2023. Additionally, he serves as the chairperson of the West African Tax Administration Forum (WATAF) and is a council member of the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF).
Darboe was unavailable for comment as he was reportedly on an IMF mission in the subregion.
