Heavy Rains and Flooding in Sudan Disrupt Aid Deliveries, UN Reports

The United Nations has raised concerns that severe rains and flooding are hindering the delivery of aid to conflict-affected areas in Sudan, as well as neighboring Chad and South Sudan.

With over half of Sudan’s population facing extreme hunger, the deteriorating humanitarian situation is becoming more critical.

Though aid convoys are reaching parts of Darfur, access is severely limited due to impassable roads caused by floods and mud. “We need sustained and improved access to scale up aid, save lives, and prevent famine from spreading,” said Leni Kinzli, spokesperson for the World Food Programme (WFP) in Sudan.

The ongoing conflict, which began between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in April of last year, has been exacerbated by heavy rainfall. Over 317,000 people have been affected by the flooding, with 118,000 displaced, and the country is now also facing a cholera outbreak due to contaminated water supplies.

Since the conflict began, thousands have been killed and nearly eight million people displaced.
