Honouring Courage: Nigerian Peacekeepers Receive ECOWAS Medals in The Gambia

On May 9, 2025, members of the 9th Nigerian Company (NIGCOY 9), deployed to The Gambia under the ECOWAS peacekeeping mission, were awarded the ECOWAS Peace Medal in recognition of their outstanding service.

Having arrived in The Gambia on June 26, 2024, the company fulfilled its mission with distinction, helping to maintain peace, order, and stability in the region. The medal ceremony was a heartfelt celebration of their dedication, sacrifice, and impact during their time in the country.

The event brought together a wide range of dignitaries, including senior military officials, community leaders, and government representatives. Speakers at the ceremony commended the Nigerian troops for their professionalism and commitment, describing their role as critical to the continued calm and cooperation in the area.

Special praise was given to the company’s commander for the precise organisation of the parade and for overseeing several humanitarian efforts that supported local communities. These acts of service strengthened the bond between the peacekeepers and the people they were sent to protect.

The highlight of the ceremony came when NIGCOY 9 received an official commendation from Mission Headquarters, acknowledging their essential contribution to regional peace and security.

Their mission may be complete, but the impact of their service continues to resonate deeply in The Gambia and across West Africa.
