Investigators Recover Black Boxes After Fatal DC Mid-Air Collision

Investigators have retrieved the flight data recorders, commonly known as black boxes, from an American Airlines jet that collided with a U.S. Army helicopter near Washington, D.C., on Wednesday.

The National Transportation Safety Board stated that they have gathered significant information but need time to verify the details. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days.

Authorities have begun identifying some of the 67 victims who lost their lives in the crash.

President Donald Trump expressed his condolences on Thursday, calling the incident a heartbreaking tragedy. He also blamed past diversity policies in air traffic control hiring, though he did not provide evidence to support his claim.

An audio recording from air traffic control captures officials asking the helicopter crew if they had visual contact with the plane before the collision.
