The ceremonies began with a motorcade from the Carters’ hometown of Plains to Atlanta, where Carter will lie in state before proceeding to Washington, D.C. After the services, Carter will be laid to rest in Plains beside his wife, Rosalynn, who passed away last year at 96.
The route highlights significant locations from Carter’s life, including the train depot that served as his 1976 presidential campaign headquarters and a gas station once operated by his brother, Billy.
Carter’s global influence remains profound. He was the first U.S. president to visit sub-Saharan Africa on a state trip and openly opposed South Africa’s apartheid regime, advocating for the rights of Black citizens.
