Judge Orders Investigation Into Suspected Robber’s Escape From Custody

A High Court in Banjul, presided over by Justice Ebrima Jaiteh, has directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to launch a full investigation into how a robbery suspect, Ebrima Drammeh, managed to escape from police custody.

The judge issued the order after Drammeh’s continued absence in court began causing delays in the ongoing trial, which involves two other co-accused: Mustapha Sonko and Ebrima Barry. All three are facing charges of conspiracy and robbery.

The court learned that Drammeh—also known as Jammeh Kumba from Sukuta—had been legally remanded at Mile Two Central Prison. However, he escaped while under the supervision of the Brikama police station’s prosecution unit, where he had been taken for a separate case.

Concerned by the lack of progress, Justice Jaiteh ordered the police to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the escape. He also instructed that the Gambia Police Force’s prosecution unit, through the IGP’s office, must submit a detailed report outlining the steps being taken to locate, arrest, and return Drammeh to custody.

The trial is set to continue on July 7.
