The 32nd Board of Governors meeting for the Regional Maritime University (RMU) concluded in Monrovia, where leaders from Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Gambia, and Cameroon reaffirmed their dedication to advancing maritime education. This annual gathering serves as a platform for these nations to discuss RMU’s role in shaping the next generation of maritime professionals and addressing challenges facing the industry.
In his remarks, Liberia Maritime Authority Commissioner, Cllr. Neto Lighe, stressed the importance of each member state’s contribution to RMU’s continued growth. Lighe called for investments through financial support, academic partnerships, and collaborative efforts that will drive RMU toward becoming a premier institution in maritime studies.
“It is critical that every member state continues to invest in RMU’s growth,” Lighe emphasized. “Our commitment today will determine the university’s future trajectory, ensuring it remains a beacon of maritime education for West and Central Africa.”
The five-day meeting highlighted the essential role RMU plays in the regional maritime sector. Lighe urged further investment in infrastructure, research, and human resource development, pointing out that RMU symbolizes a shared vision for building a resilient African maritime industry.
Addressing the rapid evolution of the global maritime sector, Lighe noted the need for RMU to adapt to rising standards and demands for skilled seafarers. He affirmed Liberia’s support for RMU, including resources for educational materials and aid for academic programs, emphasizing Liberia’s commitment to empowering future maritime professionals.
Lighe also recognized RMU’s tradition of honoring member state leaders who contribute to maritime development. In July 2024, Liberia’s former Vice President Joseph N. Boakai Sr. was awarded an honorary degree, celebrating his role in furthering RMU’s mission.
The meeting concluded with a strong sense of purpose among member nations, committing to collective efforts that will bolster RMU’s impact and foster greater regional cooperation in the years ahead.
