Liberia, Gambia, and Sierra Leone Sign Roaming Agreement to Cut Telecom Costs

Liberia, The Gambia, and Sierra Leone have signed a new agreement to reduce roaming costs for mobile users, aiming to make cross-border communication more affordable.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) will roll out in phases, starting on May 2, 2025. From that date, travelers from Liberia to Sierra Leone will receive calls for free and access mobile services—calls, SMS, and data—at local rates without needing a new SIM card.

By July 1, 2025, these benefits will extend to citizens of Liberia and The Gambia, eliminating additional international roaming charges for travelers within the three nations. The initiative will positively impact an estimated 16 million people.

Led by the Liberia Telecommunication Authority (LTA) in partnership with regulatory bodies from Sierra Leone and The Gambia, the agreement aligns with broader ECOWAS efforts to create a single, seamless mobile network across West Africa.

LTA Chairman Abdullah Kamara emphasized that this deal is a step toward eliminating high roaming fees across the region. Similar agreements have already been implemented between Ghana, Benin, and Togo, while Senegal and Mauritania signed a deal in 2023.

This latest initiative signals continued progress toward affordable and accessible mobile communication across West Africa.
