Lorry Plunges into River in Ethiopia, Killing 71, Including Wedding Guests

At least 71 people lost their lives in a tragic accident in southern Ethiopia when a lorry veered off a bridge and fell into a river in Sidama state on Sunday. Among the victims were guests returning from a wedding party, according to local authorities.

The overloaded vehicle failed to navigate the bridge before plunging into the water, a local official stated. Among the deceased were 68 men and 3 women, as confirmed by the Sidama Police Commission.

Images from the scene showed recovery efforts in Bona district, with some bodies laid out and covered in tarpaulin.

Ethiopia has one of the highest road fatality rates in Africa, with speeding and traffic violations often cited as leading causes. Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures across the country.
