A man identified as Kemo Jobe has been sentenced to ten years in prison by the High Court in Banjul after being found guilty of robbing a Huawei mobile phone from Lamin Touray.
The robbery occurred on July 12, 2022, in the Talinding Buffer Zone area. According to the prosecution, Jobe used a bottle to threaten the victim before forcibly taking the phone, which was valued at D8,344.
During the trial, the prosecution presented two witnesses, while Jobe testified in his own defense. The judge stated that the evidence clearly showed the phone was taken by force and through intimidation. Witness testimonies gave a clear account of the crime, and Jobe was found in possession of the stolen phone, further strengthening the case against him.
Jobe claimed he was not at the crime scene and that he was at his father’s workplace at the time. However, the judge rejected this alibi, describing it as fabricated and lacking independent support. Eyewitnesses had identified Jobe as the person who committed the crime.
The judge remarked on the seriousness of the offense, highlighting the growing concern over violent crimes and their threat to public safety. He condemned the use of violence in robbery and stressed the need to protect society from such actions.
While not handing down the maximum sentence, the judge emphasized that the punishment should serve as a lesson and a warning to others.
