Mauritius Blocks Social Media Access Ahead of Parliamentary Elections

The Mauritius government announced on Friday, November 1, that it would block access to social media sites until November 11, following parliamentary elections scheduled for November 10.

The announcement came from the national communications regulator, citing concerns over national security. This decision follows a recent wiretapping scandal that stirred the nation, as recordings of private conversations involving politicians, business figures, civil society members, and journalists were leaked on social media.

The government claimed the leaks posed a serious threat to public safety, prompting the suspension of all social media access. The Information and Communication Technology Authority confirmed that all internet service providers were directed to block these platforms, effective immediately, until November 11.

Network provider EMTEL announced it would comply with the directive, warning that users would experience disruptions.

A statement from the prime minister’s office highlighted the importance of the suspension to safeguard national security and stability, with a crisis committee reportedly meeting to manage ongoing risks. Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth is currently seeking a second term in office.
