The National Assembly of The Gambia held a solemn lying-in-state ceremony yesterday to honor Abdoulie Bojang, a former speaker who passed away on Friday. Bojang, originally from Sagnajorr and raised in Brikama, was a teacher before ascending to significant roles in public service, including deputy speaker, speaker of parliament, and ambassador to South Africa.
In a heartfelt eulogy, Speaker Fabakary Tombong Jatta described Bojang as a sociable and optimistic figure, dedicated to serving his country. Jatta praised Bojang’s commitment to fostering young talent and his legacy of hard work, loyalty, and discipline, which earned him respect across political divides. He also celebrated Bojang’s contributions to parliamentary committees and his impact on The Gambia’s development.
Sheriffo Nyassi, Bojang’s cousin, expressed gratitude for Bojang’s mentorship and sought forgiveness for any wrongs he might have committed during his service. Vice President Muhamadou Jallow extended condolences to the Bojang family, highlighting the late speaker’s selflessness and dedication to uplifting his community. Jallow noted that Bojang’s life exemplified leadership through positive influence and meaningful change.
The late Abdoulie Bojang was laid to rest in his hometown of Sagnajorr, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire many in The Gambia.
