NHIA Highlights Progress in Expanding Healthcare Coverage

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) provided an update on its ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare access across The Gambia during a press conference held at SDKJ-ICC. The event brought together government officials, healthcare providers, and development partners to discuss progress and future plans for the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Introduced in 2021, the scheme aims to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses for middle- and low-income earners. Since its launch, the NHIA has worked to regulate private insurance providers and expand coverage for vulnerable populations.

Officials highlighted key achievements, including the integration of new healthcare facilities and the digitalization of health insurance services to improve efficiency. Bai Mass Saine, CEO of NHIA, emphasized the goal of ensuring that all residents have access to essential healthcare without financial hardship.

Dr. Hassan Njie, director of health services at NHIA, reported that 538 women had enrolled in the scheme, with 399 officially registered in the latest phase. The initiative began with a pilot program at Bundung Maternal and Child Hospital in July 2023 and has since expanded to 12 additional public health facilities.

NHIA continues to collaborate with the Ministry of Health, private providers, and international donors to secure funding and technical support. However, challenges such as funding gaps and enrollment hesitancy remain. To address these, NHIA plans to increase public awareness and introduce digital platforms for streamlined registration and claims processing.

Looking ahead, NHIA aims to expand enrollment, improve service delivery, and implement innovative financing mechanisms. Officials encouraged all Gambians to participate in the scheme and stay informed about registration processes to maximize its benefits.

With ongoing efforts and strategic partnerships, NHIA remains committed to achieving universal health coverage in The Gambia.
