Nigerian Military Reports Killing 140 Suspected Gunmen and Kidnappers

The Nigerian military has reported the deaths of 140 suspected terrorists and armed kidnappers during recent operations targeting Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and various criminal gangs.

Military spokesperson Edward Buba explained that these operations took place across several regions in Nigeria, with updates provided at the military’s weekly briefing on Thursday. In addition to these actions, authorities detained 135 more suspects and safely rescued 76 people who had been held for ransom.

Nigeria has long faced violence from groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP, as well as kidnappings by criminal gangs. Despite measures, including the death penalty in some states, kidnappings remain prevalent. Armed groups often target northern villages, schools, and travelers, usually demanding ransom payments.
