Nigeria’s Power Grid Suffers Another Partial Collapse, Causing Widespread Blackouts

Nigeria’s national power grid experienced a partial collapse on Tuesday, marking the ninth such incident this year, leading to blackouts in several regions across the country.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported that the disruption occurred around 12:52 PM GMT, caused by a series of line and generator trips that destabilized the system.

Some areas, including the capital Abuja, saw power restored about an hour after the collapse, but outages persisted in other regions. TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah stated that engineers are actively working to restore power to the affected states as quickly as possible.

Frequent power outages have long plagued Nigeria, with its aging power infrastructure, incidents of vandalism, and inadequate gas supply for thermal power plants, which supply over 75% of the nation’s electricity. Despite having the capacity to generate about 13,000 megawatts, Nigeria’s grid can only distribute about a third of that, leaving businesses and households dependent on costly fuel generators to meet their energy needs.
