Peace Corps Director Carol Spahn, during her visit to Banjul, celebrated the enduring relationship between The Gambia and the Peace Corps, which has been active in the country since 1967. Her visit marked the official opening of the agency’s new office in Bijilo, symbolizing a renewed commitment to their partnership.
Director Spahn praised the transformative impact of the Peace Corps’ work in The Gambia, highlighting contributions in education, agriculture, environment, and health. She shared insights from her interactions with volunteers and local communities, emphasizing the Gambian spirit’s profound influence on volunteers, which often lasts a lifetime.
Reflecting on the importance of cultural exchange, Spahn stated, “I have learned that giving and sharing are more powerful than receiving. Kindness and compassion are essential in overcoming challenges.”
Peace Corps Country Director Siri Morley also spoke about the deep connections between The Gambia and the United States, suggesting their partnership fosters healing and mutual understanding.
Eric Mehler, the US Embassy’s charge d’affaires, noted that the Peace Corps has been instrumental in building genuine friendships and understanding between the two nations. He lauded Director Spahn’s visit to the agency’s smallest African post as a testament to its significance.
Public Service Minister Baboucarr Bouy expressed the Gambian government’s gratitude for the Peace Corps’ contributions and assured continued support for the partnership.
The new office in Bijilo is seen as a stepping stone to further strengthening ties and fostering sustainable development in The Gambia.
