World leaders and religious figures have welcomed Pope Leo XIV following his historic election as the new head of the Catholic Church.
Born Robert Prevost in Chicago, he becomes the first North American to be chosen as pope. Known for his commitment to reform, he spent many years in Peru as a missionary before rising to the rank of archbishop.
The President of the United States described his election as a proud moment for the nation.
Later today, Pope Leo XIV will celebrate Mass in the Sistine Chapel with the cardinals who selected him.
While many in Peru are celebrating his appointment, he steps into his new role facing serious challenges, including unresolved allegations of sexual abuse cover-ups within the Church.
