A preliminary report from the Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBoS) has revealed that the country’s population now stands at 2,422,712, with females making up 51% and males 49%.
The census also highlighted Brikama as the most populous Local Government Area (LGA), accounting for 47.5% of the national population.Brikama, together with Kanifing, constitutes 63.2% of the Gambia’s total population.
The report, launched by Vice President Muhammed S. Jallow, also emphasized that the Gambia has a predominantly youthful population, with 40.8% under the age of 15 and only 3% aged 65 and above.
This demographic trend is expected to put pressure on the working-age population in the years to come.Additionally, the census revealed that 95% of the population are Gambian nationals.
Among foreign nationals, Senegalese form the largest group at 1.7%, followed by Guineans at 1.5%. Other nationalities, including Nigerians and Sierra Leoneans, make up less than 1% each.
Statistician General Nyakassi MB Sanyang highlighted the significance of the census for policy-making and development planning. He encouraged all stakeholders to use this data to drive positive change and build a better future for the Gambia.
