McCarthy Square was alive with energy and admiration yesterday as President Adama Barrow made a striking entrance dressed in full military uniform. The event marked the graduation ceremony of Intake 39 of The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), and the President’s presence brought added excitement and pride to the occasion.
As he marched smartly to inspect the newly trained soldiers, President Barrow, dressed in gleaming camouflage, drew loud cheers and applause from both soldiers and civilians alike.
In his address, the President reminded the new graduates that joining the armed forces is more than a career move—it’s a call to serve the nation with courage, discipline, and honor.
“Military service is a noble and honorable calling,” he told them. “It demands not only skill and strength but also loyalty, humility, and respect for democracy and the rule of law. As you wear the uniform, remember that you are guardians of our national ideals and protectors of The Gambia’s peace and sovereignty.”
The graduation ceremony was attended by the Chief of Defense Staff, Momar Cham, as well as senior military and security officials and other dignitaries.
A total of 351 soldiers completed their basic military training and are now set to be deployed to various units within the army, including the navy and the National Guard. This group represents the third intake since the government lifted its freeze on military recruitment.
