Renewed Clashes in Eastern DRC, Niger Plans Political Transition, and Risks in the Horn of Africa

Fighting resumed in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday after a brief two-day pause, as M23 rebels launched attacks on Congolese army positions in South Kivu province. This escalation comes despite recent calls from African leaders for an immediate ceasefire.

Meanwhile, Niger is preparing to hold a national convention to outline its long-awaited political transition following the July 2023 coup that removed President Mohamed Bazoum from power. The gathering is expected to set the course for the country’s future governance.

In the Horn of Africa, experts highlight both economic opportunities and the growing risk of escalating conflicts in the region. While development prospects remain strong, instability continues to pose significant challenges.
