On Saturday, South Africa’s Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, collapsed while delivering a speech in Tzaneen, Limpopo province, which is located 412 kilometers (256 miles) northeast of Johannesburg.
The incident occurred during a ceremony commemorating the inauguration of a local traditional leader.
Limpopo’s provincial premier, Phophi Ramathuba, who is also a medical doctor, informed state broadcaster SABC that Mashatile had been affected by the heat but was in no immediate danger. “The deputy president is fine, he is with his medical team. I was with them, he’s ok and there’s no need to worry,” Ramathuba assured.
Mashatile’s collapse has raised concerns, but officials emphasize that he is now recovering well.
