South African Music Icon Winnie Khumalo Passes Away at 51

Renowned South African singer and actress Winnie Khumalo has died at the age of 51 following a brief illness, her family has confirmed.

 

Khumalo, celebrated for her vibrant career that began in the 1980s, gained fame with her hit song Live My Life and her roles in popular South African television series. Her powerful voice and dynamic performances made her a beloved figure in the music industry.

 

Her sister, Tshepi Rakeepile, revealed that Khumalo passed away on Tuesday while being transported to the hospital. “We thought she was recovering, but this morning it became clear she hadn’t fully recovered. She was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, she was pronounced dead,” Rakeepile shared.

 

While the nature of her illness remains undisclosed, Khumalo leaves behind a remarkable legacy in music and television. In addition to her solo albums, she worked as a backup singer for the late Brenda Fassie, further solidifying her status as an industry icon.

 

She is survived by her daughter, Rethabile Khumalo, who has followed in her footsteps as a singer, and her son, Thabo Khumalo.

 

Fans and fellow artists have expressed shock and sorrow over her passing, flooding social media with heartfelt tributes. Kalawa Jazmee Records, the label she worked with, described her as a “true icon” whose passion and talent inspired many.

 

“Her powerful voice and unforgettable performances have left an indelible mark on the music industry and the hearts of her fans,” the label said in a statement.
