Tems Wins Second Grammy, Making History for Nigeria

Nigerian singer Tems has secured her second Grammy, winning Best African Music Performance for her hit Love Me Jeje. She triumphed over fellow nominees Yemi Alade, Burna Boy, and Wizkid at the ceremony in Los Angeles.

In an emotional acceptance speech, she expressed gratitude to her team and family, highlighting her mother’s influence. “Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday, and this is her first Grammys. I just want to thank you, mum,” she said.

Love Me Jeje, which samples Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 classic, has amassed 125 million streams on Spotify and 21 million views on YouTube.

Tems made history as the first Nigerian to win two Grammys, following her 2023 victory for Best Melodic Rap Performance with Wait For U alongside Future and Drake.

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu congratulated the singer, praising her for bringing national pride to the global stage.

Tems was also nominated in two other categories: Best Global Music Album for Born in the Wild and Best R&B Song for Burning. With eight Grammy nominations to her name, she continues to shape the global music scene.

Her career took off in 2018 with Mr Rebel, followed by the breakthrough hit Try Me in 2019. She gained international recognition after featuring on Wizkid’s Essence, which earned multiple award nominations.

With numerous accolades, including NAACP Image Awards, a Soul Train Music Award, and BET Awards, Tems’ influence on African music remains undeniable.
