The Gambia Sends Special Envoy to Mauritania Over Migrant Concerns

The Gambian government has dispatched Dr. Mamadou Tangara, Minister of Foreign Affairs, as a special envoy to Mauritania to address issues affecting Gambian migrants.

In a statement issued on March 27, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Gambians in Mauritania. It acknowledged growing concerns regarding their situation and assured that diplomatic efforts were underway to address them.

Dr. Tangara’s deployment highlights the strong diplomatic ties between The Gambia and Mauritania. The Gambian Embassy in Nouakchott has been directed to enhance engagement with Mauritanian authorities and strengthen its support for Gambian nationals.

President Adama Barrow’s decision to send the special envoy aims to facilitate direct discussions with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. The initiative seeks to resolve concerns and reinforce cooperation between the two nations.

The Ministry urged Gambians in Mauritania to register with the Gambian Embassy in Nouakchott to improve communication and access to assistance. Families in The Gambia were also encouraged to share this information with relatives abroad to ensure all Gambians in Mauritania remain informed.

Reaffirming the positive relations between both countries, the Ministry encouraged Gambians in Mauritania to remain law-abiding and act as good representatives of their homeland. It assured that authorities would continue monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and well-being of Gambian citizens.
